Native Animals. In the uncultivated parts
of the state the elk deer, bear, beaver, fisher,
wolf, otter, wild=cat porcupine and many
smaller animals are still to be found; the buffalo
and the wild turkey have recently become
extinct. Among birds, the eagle, owl, quail,
partridge, grouse, goose, duck, pelican, loon &c
are found in greater or less numbers and
varieties; and pigeons are abundant. The
lakes and rivers afford large quantities of
fish some of them the finest & most
delicate articles of food. Among them
are the whitefish, trout, siskowet, markilonge,
pickerel, & perch; also the curious bill=fish,
and spoon=bill sturgeons.
