Lands

The title of all land is derived from the
government, but large grants have been
made to the state f̶o̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶f̶o̶l̶l̶o̶w̶i̶n̶g̶
o̶b̶j̶e̶c̶t̶s̶ ; for the support of the common
schools, of a University, of an Agricultural
college, or normal schools, and for
the drainage of swamps. The
lands still in the hands of the United
States may be purchased for cash at one
dollar and a quarter per acre [at]
or may be entered without cost under
the Homestead Law at Menasha
Steven's Point, La Crosse, Eau Claire,
Falls of St Croix, or Bayfield.
The Land belonging to the state may
be purchased at Madison at prices
varying from three fourths of a dollar
to two and a half dollars.
Usually only one fourth of the
purchase money is required in
hand, the remainder on a long
credit with the interest at seven per
cent per annum.
