Smithsonian Institution Washington Oct. 23, 1868.

Dear Sir;

Your letter of Sept. 1st informing us that you had sent Judge Cox's observations at Hartford was received during my absence from Washington, but since my return we have not had time to examine the meteorological material that has accumulated.

However we hasten to thank you for this revered evidence of your interest in the [illegible] operations or the [lushly?-illegible] and to say that we are pleased with your remarks in regard to the importance of the work we have commenced on the rain falls. The materials that we have collected are now so arranged that any additions we may obtain

Elevation above the [cut-off] about 1000 feet.

Judge Cox Lien. [June?] 16th, 1864.

He was judge of Probater Member of the Legislature &c.

*About one mile north of the range.
