Dear Sir

I have received your letter of 23
net. and shall be happy to have further
acquaintance and correspondence with you.
I had often heard of you & of your collections
through friends who had seen you & them at
Madison. The pamphlet you sent me was
also received & read with much interest.

Having been one of the original movers
on the subject of a State Historical Society I have
always felt a deep interest in its progress -- have
exerted myself and have been at some
considerable expense to promote the cause
of the Society. You may well imagine, then,
the regret with which I learned of the
troubles of last winter that lead to the
newspaper controversy to which you refer.
I still hope to see all differences reconciled
& to see the few who are devoting their
time to the objects of the society united &
working together for the common good
of the state and of the country. With
this object in view I stand ready to do
any thing proper for me to do that will
tend to restore harmony and set the Society
again upon a proper basis. 33
