The red clay contains a few large boulders' and passes into Boulder clay-

Stratification of Brown sandstone very irregular, indicating deposite upon an uneven surface or subsequent disturbance. It is quarried at Houghton Point on Chaquomegon Bay for rail road structures &c

Chaqwamegon on point or bar was broken through by the storm of last November for a distance of almost 300 feet; fast filling again, sand beach extending from south points of Madaline Island fast wearing away.

Red sandstone with shale and layers of conglomerate found on Silver creek a little below the R. Road bridge-forming a high bank-above it drift & marly clay.

Here the red clay contains more sand & boulders than at Ashland.

S. West of Bayfield the drift is sandy marl with boulders; differing from that south & south east of Ashland which contains little sand.-

White oak cut on Oak Island & used for ties on the Bridges &c of Wis. Central Railroad. Red oak west of Bayfield; some large trees.

Minnesota Point the last of a series of sand beaches extending across the Bay of Duluth-Rices Point the next anterior; there are indications of others still older & further up the bay made when the lake was at a lower level than at present.

Arranged with Mr. E.J. Sweet to continue the work in Douglas County & to report by Oct 15th at Madison.

Rode out to Pike's-4 miles No rock exposures in that direction-large boulders in the creek.
