Fortification Rock. On the Wisconsin river below the Portage there is an isolated ridge near two hundred feet in height, a little in the rear of the left bank with a crest resembling in an obscure manner, walls and batteries; hence it has been called the Fortification Rock.

Four Lakes- A beautiful series of Lakes called First, Second, Third, and Fourth Lakes in Dane County, Madison, the Capital of the Territory is situated between the two upper, or the Third and Fourth Lakes. They are all connected by a stream, the River of the Four Lakes, or Catfish, which conducts their waters into Rock river eleven and a half miles below the foot of Lake Koshkonong. See Catfish, First Lake, Second Lake, Third Lake, and Fourth Lake.
