Janesville a post town situated on the east side of Rock river in Rock county, half a mile above Rockport, which is at the head of a rapids. It is a thriving little village, the county seat of Rock county and at the point where the United States road from Racine to the Mississippi crosses Rock river. A company was incorporated in 1838 to construct a road from Racine to Janesville. 80 to Mineral Pt. 43 to Whitewater 43 to Wiota 85 to Sinipee 18 to Centerville 31 Monroe [65?] Milw. 75 from Racine 41 Madison 13 Beloit.

Janesville a town in Rock country embracing [town three and] the north half of town two in range thirteen and fourteen [town 3 & 13] and [so much of] towns three [and four] range twelve [as lie east of] on both sides of Rock river. It includes a [large] portion of the great Rock prairie, and is bounded on the west by Rock river. It is almost entirely destitute of streams and water courses.
