Washington County is bounded on the north by Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties, on the east by the state of Michigan, on the south by Milwaukee, and on the west by Dodge county; or north by the north line of town sixteen, east by the state line in the middle of Lake Michigan, south by the south line of town nine, and west by the west line of range eighteen. It is twenty four miles wide from north to south and its average length is twenty seven [and a half] miles; or six hundred and [sixty] 48 square miles or sections, Washington county was set off from Milwaukee county in 1836 and organized as a separate county in 1840.
