have ascended to the Portage, and it is supposed that when the channel of the river becomes better known to pilots it may be navigated with but little difficulty. It was through this river that the Mississippi was first discovered by Father Marquette, who passed from Green Bay by the Portage and entered the Mississippi June 17th 1673.
