Apostles (The Twelve)- A group of islands near the Detour, on the south shore of Lake Superior, immediately west of La Pointe. There are [fifteen or] twenty two islands extending along the coast about thirty miles; beautifully situated with respect to each other, high and rocky, and covered with a luxierient growth of vegetation. They lie from one to five miles from the coast, add very much to the beauty of the scenery in this part of the lake, and are so arranged as to protect the canoes, in passing, to a considerable degree from the effect of the violent storms of Lake Superior. Madiline the largest in which is [illegible] LaPointe.

Apple River, a small branch of the Neenah from the north west, entering about five miles below Rapide de Croche.

Apuckawa Lake. See Puckawa.

Arena a post town on the south side of the Wisconsin river in Iowa county, eight miles above Helena, and twelve miles north from the Blue Mounds. It is situated immediately below the
