Dekorra, a town formerly called Kentucky City, laid out in 1836 by some gentlemen from Kentucky, on the Wisconsin river a few miles below the Portage. It is the seat of Justice of Portage County. A company was incorporated in 1838 to construct a canal from this place to Marquette on Fox river at Lake Puckawa thus avoiding the Winnebago portage and much circuitous navigation on Fox River. [Where] Dekorre is the termination of the United States Road from Sauk Harbor on Lake Michigan upon which $5,000 have been expended. Its position is high, commanding, and healthy, and will be the point from which the surrounding country will receive its supplies of lumber from the Upper Wisconsin pineries and of merchandise; and the place of shipment for the surplus produce.
