Desperes, a post town on the east side of the Neenah river at the foot of the "Rapides des Peres" about six miles above Green Bay. It is the seat of justice of Brown County; the site having been agreed upon by a vote of the people of the county. The town ws laid out in 1835, on a level plane, with a good soil for gardens, and at the head of natural navigation of the Neenah river. Water is found by sinking wells to the depth of ten feet. The "Fox River Hydraulic Company" have erected a dam here and thus created a very valuable water power within the limits of the town. A lock of six feet lift surmounts the rapids.

Des Plaines- a river rising in Racine county and running south soon passes from our Territory, and enters the state of Illinois; it is so named from a species of
