Iowa County

into the Wisconsin are Mineral creek, Pipe creek, and Black Earth creek which originate on the north side of the great dividing ridge which extends from near Madison to the Mississippi. The two main branches of the Pekatonica originate on the south side of this village, and unite near Wiota, just before they leave the county. The other streams are Fever river, Bonners creek, Big and Little Otter creeks, Wolf creek, and Stafford's creek. The principal towns or villages are Mineral Point, Belmont, Dodgeville, Elk Grove, Shulsburgh, Gratiot, Wiota, Helena, Arena, Willow Springs, Gratiot's Grove and Albion. [All that past of the] This county is in the midst of the "Mineral country" and abounds in mines of lead and copper, large quantities of which are annually raised and exported to market. These products are usually sent to Galena and thence shipped down the Mississippi, but much of them are now conveyed to Lake Michigan for shipment by the northern route. The "sucker holes" or pits dug in search of lead are so very abundant that it is dangerous to pass through the country in some parts, especially in the evening. A valuable
