Jefferson County

The principal streams are Rock River and its West Branch or
Crawfish, Bark river, Johnsons Creek and the Oconomowoc, Scupernong
Whitewater and Koshkonong creek. The Lakes are Koshkonong
Rock, Ripley, Red Cedar, Cranberry, Otter, Mud, and [Wissauwa?] Lakes.
There is much excellent farming land in this county, especially
along the rivers; and its position in the direct line of
communication between Milwaukee on Lake Michigan
and the capital at Madison, must render it one of
some importance even if it had no [crossed out words] other advantages
which it has in common with the other counties. East
of Rock river the "timber land" prevails - west of it, the
Openings. There is but little prairie land in the
County; the most being in the vicinity of the Whitewater,
in the south east part of the county. The citizens are
in general sober, industrious, and enterprising
