There are a great number of small lakes in the western part of the county affording some very beautiful scenery; the water being clear and the banks high and rounded. The soil is rich, and between the lakes and a line following Root river, Poplar creek, and the Pishtaka above the mouth of Poplar creek, supports a dense growth of timber, consisting of hard and soft maple, white birtch, hickory, white and red cedar, white and red beech, black and white walnut, [red cedar], white and yellow pines, tamarack, sycamore, hackberry, poplar, white, [black], red, burr, and pin oak, lynn or basswood, common and slippery elm; many of these however are rare and but seldom seen. West of the line above mentioned the country consists of "Bur Oak Openings" interspersed with small prairies.
