Portage County, is bounded on the north by Marquette, east by Dodge, south by Dane, and west by Sauk; or north by the north line of town thirteen, east by the east line of range twelve, south by the south line of town ten and west by the Wisconsin river, and Neenah rivers; and besides this all the country lying "North of the counties of Sauk & Portage and composed in ranges two to nine inclusive, and extending to the north boundary of the territory, except fractional towns fourteen and fifteen in range nine" is annexed to and made a part of the county of Portage. It is twenty four miles wide from north to south, and has an average length of twenty five and three fourths miles, and having an area of six hundred and sixteen square miles or sections, being exactly the same dimensions as Racine county. This is exclusive of the large tract, forty eight miles wide and of an unknown length which is at present attached to Portage county. Portage county was set off from Brown in 1836, and has not yet been organized as a separate county, being attached to Dane County. Its
