Sauk County, is bounded on the north and east by the territory attached to Portage, south by Dane and Iowa and west by Richland county; or beginning on the Wisconsin river on the west line of range three east, thence north to the north line of town twelve, thence west six miles, thence north six miles, thence east, to the middle of the Wisconsin river, thence down the middle of said river until it intersects the range line between ranges seven and eight, thence south to the middle of the Wisconsin river, thence down that stream to the beginning. It is thirty miles long from east to west and has an average length of about twenty eight and a half miles, and has therefore a superficial area of about one thousand and twenty six square miles, or sections. Sauk county was set off from Crawford in 1839, and [was then] has not yet been organized as a separate county, being attached to Dane. Its population in 1840 was 102; and in 1842-303.
