Chapter XIII
1863.

Milwaukee Jan'y 7th, 1863.

Professor James Hall,
Albany N.Y.

Dear Sir,--

Mr. Hale wrote me some time ago from New York that he did not expect to return to Wisconsin soon. He appears to have abandoned us altogether. At the same time he offered to give me as a sort of return for favors bestowed, his geological map of the state now in your hands, also a copy of Iowa Geological Report; the two forthcoming volumes of N.Y. Reports; also seventy species of rare fossils,--(not to be common shells).*** I wish you would do me the favor to forward the articles by express to my address. The map, of course, I will make no publication of without your consent as the information was collected while under pay by you.

Can anything be done this winter to restore our survey? Or at least to secure the publication of the materials on hand?

Yours truly,

I.A. Lapham,

I.A. Lapham, Esq.

Respected Sir,-

A happy New Year: Saturday afternoon I made my glorious reappearing in the great city of Milwaukee.

Supposing it to be of interest to yourself and to your family also, to insert in your photograph album a correct likeness of the celebrated Danish poet and novelist Hans Christian Anderson, I honor myself by transmitting to you said portrait.***

Soon taking the liberty to call on you I am with compliments to your family,

Yours truly, P.C. Sinding.*
