Mr. Hugo Ballin

Saugatuck, Conn.

Dear Sir - Perhaps I am sending material that will be of no use to you - but you certainly have a waste paper basket to which it can be consigned with the exception of anything market "to be returned."

I send with this a list of titles which is very nearly complete. The subjects in which father was most interested were botany, geology archeology and meteorology. Perhaps his greatest interest in the latter was the benefit it would be to all the people if the laws of storms were better understood - he felt and knew the great loss of life and property on the lakes was unnecessary if not criminal.

This year's Arbor Day may have a sketch of Dr. Lapham - I have asked the state superintendent to mail a copy to you if it does

We all agree as to the height - about - 5ft - 4 inand we think his think his hat was a 7 1/4 - I am sending under separate cover two pictures both marked "to be returned". In the

the one of the Dells of the Wis., Dr. Lapham is in the foreground gathering ferns. It may give some idea of his figure.

The other picture shows two rooms in our home after my father's death. I am sending it on account of some of the furniture.

The chair in the further room was given to him by his children. All the chairs and tables were in the old home in Milwaukee The snow shoes were in father's collection?

The bookcase was made from the original cases - (which were not suitable for a private house). - it is now in the Old Settler's Club Room. in Milwaukee - it contained all that is left of father's library's and collection - the state purchased them giving the family the privilege of reserving what was in these cases.

The collection was burned in Science Hall in 1884. The herbarium is still in use at the University and the books are scattered through the State Historical Library. Only half the case is shown in this picture. It is much like the old cases except the glass doors came down to the floor and were square at the top.

I hardly know what to say of father's complexion, except that was fair, remarkably

so for such black hair, and that it burned and tanned easily - I can remember distinctly the sharp line of white at his wrist as he pushed up his sleeve to pick up some shell from the water.

One paper that is omitted in the list was on our great lakes written for the British Association for Advancement of Science. He was a member of many scientific associations - among others the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries, Copenhagen of which the Crown Prince was president. He was later Frederick 7th of Denmark.

I am enclosing with this quotations from two letters written by old family friends. They will give you one idea of the love and regard of all who knew him. We have many letters of the kind.

The list in the other package need not ne returned - the other articles are marked to be returned.

Very truly yours

The desk in the office was for business papers. etc connected with his real estate work. The chairs in both rooms were the plainest oak chairs.

On the table No. 1 much of his meteorological work was done and maps were made - It has now been made over into a pedestal for a bust made and given to us by John Marr in Munich.

On table no. 2 much of his fine drawing, for which he was famous, was done.

I did not inherit my father's talent or I could have sent you some thing better - I am sending boxes of the pages of his drawings of grasses of the U.S. which is marked "to be returned"-
