Cincinnati 1 Jan. 1836

Mr. I.A. Lapham

Dear Sir:

The other evening I examined the fossils you were so kind as to send me, and [illegible] you have the result. the names are [those?] given by Prof [illegible]—as you might have observed in my Cabinet—and am, I presume, correct so far as named. It appears very cautious not to pronounce too hastily. [The?] [most?] of them however cannot be distinctly determined but will [illegible] & more perfect specimens are obtained.

I am still corresponding with him, and [illegible] specimens. The result of which I shall be [happy?] at any time to communicate to [you?]

I duly send your letter on the [subject?] [to?] the Geological Survey of our state, and [illegible] the Report. It is an able and satisfactory document. I hope the state will do credit to itself by making a liberal appropriation.

[illegible] write [me?] on the subject and say how I can aid the good cause.

Our friend Riddell is in hopes of [receiving?] an appointment as Geologist to the state—within a principal or [illegible] It is fully competent to [illegible] anything [illegible] [may?] undertake in that way.

How is the Hist. Society [illegible] My respectful compliments to [illegible] Lapham.

Very truly yours

R. Buchanan
