Dear Vel , Barabara [Barbara] is also one of the younger generation , she is eager for
an edjucation [education], she wants to get out, get away from under the pressure to live
in the inner core.
We agreed on many subjects, there is so much need for the very poor to improve
himself, is it the every Day occurrence , to hear and listen to the report and
conversation , about the irresponsible Negro , white included, to live without
concern to keep his surroundings clean.
Barabara [Barbara] is of my opinion , there is no need to see 3 or 4 strong men living
in a house where windows need repairing, if the money is not to be had, then
use card board temporarly [temporarily], to cover basement windows to keep rats from entering
and multilying [multiplying], it is in these homes that one can allways [always] find large familys [families]
strong men and boys, yet the first impression one gets, are the empty Biatz
beer cans, the litter of broken whysky [whiskey] bottles on the grass, of what is left
of it , and broken glas [glass] in the streets.
It is the fault of the Land lord [landlord] in most cases for these unkempt homes, yet
there is no excuse to keep dirty sinks , dishes accumelated [accumulated] from 3 or 4 Days splattered walls with grase [grease] , screens in the basement broken , only a little
handy work and they could be repaired by the tennant [tenant], rather than let flies and
rodents enter in abundence [abundance].
A broom, a hammer and a few nails will hold the prch [porch] railings for a while, storm
windows never removed, while screens stand idle in the basement, such I have seen
Barbara has told me, and heard from other sources like utiliety [utility] men , servicing
these homes, it is a common saying, for a Uttillety [utility] man weather [whether] from the Gas Comp, [Company]
or Electr [Electric], comp. [Company] you will know the the public, you have to serve, as soon as you enter the Hallways you see the many empty beer cans, the whiskey bottles, the carbage [garbage] in
the hall ways [hallways] littered all over, it gives you then the idea , whom you have to serve.
A large expensive car out in frt [front], very little good furniture, viticious [ficticious] names,
the information of place of work, the serviseman [serviceman] tells me, that in most cases he
sees the two middle aged men around, healthy , but the Electric Bill, is to be under
Mabel Stewart or any other female name.
Darling, it does not make sence [sense] believe me, I allways [always] tought [thought] the man was the boss
of the home , and in his name was to be the bills, he is to be the provider.
What I am writing her was the subject of Barbaras and mine conversation, she is
one, of many Negros, who I hope achieves her goal , there fore [therefore], the reluctance on
the part of the better situated Negro, he no longer wants any part of this type of people.
The suburbanite is not better, I was glad to be able to hear Maiers speach [speech] on
Thuesday [Tuesday] night, I hope the I0,000 [10,000] a Year Negro will now see the light and be
constructive in helping to better communications in our city, if we have to en-
force a law to keep propertys [properties] in good living conditions lets do so, a stricter
law, not only a one Dollar fine, buts iss [is] up to you Darling, and the council to
get after these rich Landlords.
I am still inclined to say, that the resources are not comming [coming] to [too] fast from the
state or Federal governmemt [government], I maintain, a one cent City, and county wide income
tax one penny on the Dollar, it is the only way to keep people who tak [take] flight in
the suburbs , they must pay theyr [their] share.
I am comming [coming] bak [back] to Barbara again, it was so pleasant to talk about these things
to understand each other, her light brownbody [brown body] and I white, it did not matter
what race we where, she insisted on having some fun , to be free for that Day.
