To the Honorable the Senate and Assembly of the State of Wisconsin
Your Petitioners show that they are residents and Tax-payers of the City of Hudson State of Wisconsin and are informed that the school board of said city have petitioned your body for an increase of one fourth per cent upon the assessed valuation in addition to the one half per cent now being raised for school purposes in said city. Your Petitioners respectfully remonstrate against any increase of taxes for such purpose for the following reasons.
First - That the amount now raised is amply sufficient if economically expended for the purpose of maintaining good common schools.
Second - That our taxes are now without any tax assessed to pay orders issued for bounties for volunteers upon the assessed valuation; is Three per cent - (an exceedingly onorous tax). That in view of the heavy indirect Tax, and the prospective direct Taxes to be paid on Real Estate for the support of the Government - no additional sums should for the present be imposed.
