[in pencil---l from daughter of Gerrit Smith, expressing

Interesting]

Peterboro Feb. 23. 1870
My dear friend,
I came here last
Friday to my dear Mother
who has been very ill
for three weeks. At times
we are greatly encouraged
about her & then again
we are very anxious.
She has been talking
so much of you this
morning, that I decided
to do at once what had
long been in my thoughts,
write you a few lines.
Mother's affection for you
is greater than I can des-
cribe! Her recollections
of you this morning
were so vivid & thrilling
