...picturesque, but there there are photos to be had in China - more's the pity. Even postcards were not to be had that were worth while. We visited a cathedral a temple of many altars and last but not least a "First Class Gambling House." That is what the sign said. Macao is called the Oriental Monaco for here the Chinese love of fantau is allowed full swing and are in the hands of a monopoly which pays the government well. The game was going on in the second floor. We were invited upstairs where a well hole over the table allowed one to look down. They brought up a plate of melon seeds, which each player continuously eats during the game. There were two good looking girls, whose rouged cheeks announded thier character who were playin and one won a big bunch of money. We couldn't understand what it was all about. Three hours we spent seeing the town, and pronounced it a marvelously beautiful place, with views out over the open sea on one side, and into closed seas on the other sides, hills, rugged rocks, tropical vegetation, a drive by the water, and curious Chinese streets &c. The chief beauty tho' is the water with its myriad of brown boats filled with women and children. This was once a great commercial center, but Hong Kong has stolen its prestige. It is cooler than that city which is a relief. We are now on the Hue Sing but it is not so nice as the boat this morning. We shall have our dinner here and within Canton (DV) at 6:30 a.m.
Aug 28, 1912 - According to expedition we arrived at 6:30 on the morning of Thursday Aug. 22. The only horses in Canot seem to be employed for the mounted police. They can only go single file through the streets and conveyances for humans are sedan chairs, or rickshas, the first the most common.
