The usual inhospitable air pervaded the place when we asked our questions. We were received a very peaceful prettily furnished sitting room. These missionaries do enjoy comforts! They directed us to one of their graduate doctors Lan Sin Shang who was teaching at Miss Lewis school for girls. We went there and found she could speak little English, but we learned that her daughter had been elected a member of the Assembly and that she did not approve and caused her to resign. This daughter had not gone to the U.S. to study. A little boy played about her feet. She explained that she had had only one child - a girl - so her sister-in-law had given her this boy wom she had adopted as her own son. She and all her family were Christians and her father also had been one and would not have her feet bound. Yet this Christian girl was the only one to resign and I felt that the missionaries had something to do with it. Dr. Lam knew none of the members and said these revolutionists did not think much of Christians, nor have much to do with them. Miss Lewis who has a famous school was in bed with dengy fever, but she got up and looked pretty mad when she saw we were women and learned what we wanted. She was old, crabbed, sour, bigoted - all this with due allowance for the effect of the fever. She know no man than the Fultons.
