When all the help--waitresses,porters,waiters,chambermaids--employed
at the Continental Palace Hotel departed in a body to join the Leftist
army the work of waiting on table and the making of beds was done by
the daughters of the aristocratic families of Madrid who were in San
Sebastian under the protection of the various embassies quartered there.
They now have scattered heaven knows where. But before Hallett Johnson
left San Sebastian every American there had been evacuated. He and his
staff have done a superb job.
