Feb 16/89 Charlotte I.C. Kirby [illegible] Rec Feb 16th 89. Salt Lake City Feb 16/89. (no answer) Pres. Woodruff, Your kind answer to my personal recital, is rec-d, thanks. I have always found that "[illegible] extremity was God's opportunity", & in all my trials of that character, I have been driven more closely to the Arm of God, & have to learned to learn upon Him, that it could seem to me almost sacrilege to now, lean on man or look to him for guidance Christ says "give me thine heart." - I feel in my inmoral soul, that [illegible]

I know, that the present work now opening before me is my work, my life work five years ago, I said to Aunt Zina, (In answer to her wish that I would work with the women & chiose a useful life in with theirs.

Aunt Zina when you are at the head of the women here I shall feel very differently, & when the women of Utah teach Suffrage, I shall come to the point, for that is my work." This must have been prophetic, for both conditions are now here, Altho Aunt Zina said, at this time, she did not beleive she would

I wrote an open letter to the women of Ameria as a greeting, on the formation of our [illegible] Society, it was read at our last Meeting & the vote carried that it should be published in Eastern papers - After the Meeting Dr. R. Pratt came up to the stand, & said she thought it presumptious in us to send such a letter, - & she would not like to have our organization appear riduc^u^lous. I [send] you should have voted a

contrary mind then.- it is too late now.

This little circumstance was of great value to me - & showed me a wisdom. In my being placed there I was, I could write such a letter & have it warmly rec-d by the women to whom it was addressed for my personal acquain-tance with them, made it possible, & a social standing I held in washington, made Belva Lockwood say, "The lady from Utah has a strong friend at home, in her mother-in Law. It was dear mother last wish that I continue the work she had commenced. This is now my own desire, & while I may not always persue the modus opperan-di - that another woman differently constituted may, still, the result may show a fore-sight on my part, & as that my heart is committed to this work of Women Suffrage, I may err in judgment some times, & we my zeal will pardon that

when the object for which we work is attained! I had a long talk with br. Angus Canon. A satisfactory one to me. - & I beleive I shall be able to satisfy the brethren, as to my public work - past & present & my sisters must try to trust me, until they can under -stand the whys, & where-fores. I honor & admire a beautiful religious life - like my brother's, - & am myself a prayful woman. Yet unlike my brother, I enjoy, a fine spirited argument, the life of a political campaign, the brushing of old ideas, the introduction of of new ones.

With kindest feelings, [I Misterly] C. A. Kirby.

[FIGURE] GIBSON CO. DENVER J. Frank Pickering's MIRROR OF UTAH World's Fair Vaudevilles. Payson, Utah Sept 9th 1892.

Mirror of Utah. J. Frank Pickering's MIRROR OF UTAH consists of twenty artistic paintings, each seven by eleven feet in size, covering all the principal points of interest in the Territory.

Realistic scenes of pioneer days and of Utah's early history, fine views of lake and mountain scenery, prominent buildings, the mining and manufacturing industries of the territory all have a place in this panorama.

A company of musical and comedy artists will acompany the entertainment and the route will include all the principal towns and cities of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and states east and it is also proposed to locate in Chicago during the World's Fair.

A good opportunity for live advertisers presents itself in the drop curtain for the MIRROR OF UTAH. This curtain will contain a correct picture of the World's Fair buildings and grounds and around this scene will be spaces for advertising cards, each about two by three feet in size. But very few firms can be represented on this curtain and our propositions are made only to the leading manufacturers and dealers of the Territory. If you are given the opportunity to represent your business thereon, you should take advantage of it as thousands of intelligent people will see this curtain, and it is advertising which they can't fail to see and read.

The tour will be commenced early next month and about one hundred Utah towns will be visited before leaving for the East.

Dear Bro:-

As I have been requested by one or two bishops and also by one of our stake presidency to present my entertainment in their respective meeting houses, I write to ask what you think of my plan. My panorama consists of twenty scenes of Utah scenes and early Church History and is designed (on my Eastern tour especially) to counter act and disprove many of the false statements made against Utah and her people. Kindly note enclosed clipping and list of scenes and write me as soon as possible whether you consider the entertainment worthy of the patronage of the Mormon people generally

and of the support of the officers of the wards in the way I suggested in opening my letter. If so, I will try to arrange my plans so that the entertainment can be given under the auspices of the M.M.M.I.A. or other associations of each ward as much as possible instead of working in the usual routine of "shows."

An early reply will oblige, Your Bro in the gospel Frank Pickering.

OUR HOTEL, THEATRE and NEWSPAPER DIRECTORY will soon be out. A good chance for advertising for live business houses. Write for particulars.

Dear Brother -

Some time ago I wrote in relation to my set of paintings "Mirror of Utah" and received a reply from Bro. Reynolds asking me to name a place and date of performance that some one might be detailed to witness the entertainment and report to you its features. I had intended to do this at various times but could not do so in a single instance as we were rarely advertised in a place more than two or three days ahead and I could not have written you in time for you to have taken any action in the matter.

I consider my entertainment to be our worthy of the patronage of the people as it is
