Letter from John G. Hafen, 28 September 1894 [LE-43043]

Santa Clara Sep 28^th ^1894^ Pres. Wilford Woodruff in answer to your request Sep 13th will state. The writer of this enclosed letter States that I John G. Hafen and Councler have accused him in a Shamefull manner to a certain bro. thats blind And askes the question why the Bishop Should oppose him in Such a manner[.] States further that this bro was doying well under his treatment, and that after his quitting his treatment that he was in a sorrowfull condition.

This certain man E. A. Manz pertends to be a member of our Church but cannot Show a recomend and pretends to be a doctor which he could not Substanchate. And he undertook to cure this certain bro. which is blind and Sead he would haf to per form an operation and when I heard of this I felt it my duty to warn him against the dan ger of of Such an operation I spoke to two of his sons & one of his daughters and thay and thay expressed their feeling to the Same effect as mine. And this certain bro. took our council. And I can testify that this bro. feels just as good as before his treatment Your bro in the Gospel John G. Hafen Bp.

Werther Herr Präsident!

In Kürze will ich nun einmal die Feder zur Hand nehmen, um Ihnen einige Zeilen zu schreiben: Ich habe mich nämlich kürzlich hier in S. Clara niedergelassen, und that [war] das beste für jeder Bruder Kürzlich bekam ich einen Patienten, welcher vom grauen Star befallen war nach kurzer Behandlung ^war^ der Zustand

des Patienten ein guter. Nun kürzlich ging der Bischoph mit seinem Kanzler und verschimpfte [beschimpfte] mich dort auf eine traurige Art. Natürlicher Weise sagte der Kranke, dass ich Ihn nicht mehr besuchen müsse und seit dieser Zeit ist der Zustand dieses Patienten ein bedenklich trauriger. Nun möchte ich an Sie die Bitte stellen zu Unte[r]suchen, warum der Bischoph so wider mich ist.
