Alfred look in you Austin heart,
"It will tell you what keepeth us twain apart"
"I have not left you, I never was near"
For twaddle, not poetry enchants your ear.

"When you gaze on the moon you see but her,"
* you'll feel her "tic" when the pages stir
Of In Cap and Gown at the Western University:
To make you laureate was sheer perversity.

So how should you, Austin, hope to sing;
Poetry is a sacred thing
Instead of your further laureate ramblin'
You'd better take English with -- the professor
of English.

* The moon's tic make a man lunatic, i.e. mad.
