[left page] TUESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1865. Heavy snow storm with cold wind from N.N.E. Served Hargreaves with Sumns. to [shew? cause?] Cold drive out there. Got a letter from, & wrote a letter to, Alick.

WEDNESDAY, 11. Clear with a bright sun but very cold - lots of snow. Office as usual. Mr Crawford of Glasgow Scot. to dinner [line crossed out] [line crossed out] [line crossed out]

THURSDAY, 12. Fine day not too cold. Splendid sleighing. Letter from Alick [line crossed out] and one from Nelson to me in the morning. Crawford to dinner again

[right page] FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1865. Mild day & snow during the evening. After office drove about the town with Hunt (U.C. Bank) then came out home. Crawford again to dinner Got Summonsvs Hargreaves absolute.

SATURDAY, 14. Heavy snow storm with a stiff breeze in the morning. Snow deep & in large drifts but weather not too cold. Letters from Fanty & Stewart - all well. Wrote to Dick.

SUNDAY, 15. Cathedral in the morning with Flo. After Lunch started for Aldboro. Slept at Iona. Very good sleighing a little heavy perhaps.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 1865 cold clear day. Went to the office about 11 1/2 a.m. & stayed till late in the afternoon. [line crossed out] [line crossed out] [crossed out] went over to [Bottins?] about D.C. suit. In the morning 10 deg below zero. 4 a.m

FRIDAY, 20. Cold day. Office morning and afternoon. On way to office in afternoon drove Miss [Pasford?] home.

SATURDAY 21. Nearly thawing. Before office Boney & Bull fought for a long time about 10 minutes before I could choke Bone off. Boney afterwards a little lame & Bull cut on the back of the head.[crossed out] [line crossed out] [line crossed out]

[left page] TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1865 Office as usual. thawing hard. Letter from Alick & wrote him. Drove out the Hamilton Road in the big sleigh with the children to see a cow.

WEDNESDAY, 22 Thawing still very fast. Bought the cow from Ward.

THURSDAY, 23 Frost last night. Didn't come home as usual to lunch & find it a good plan. At 4 p.m. walked out home with Davies (R.C.R.) then drove tandem up to the Johnson's & took Miss Johnson for a drive. Davies to dinner. Children presented me with a scrap book.

[right page] FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1865 Clear bright day. Davies out to lunch. Children went to the Griffins to dinner. Heaps of work in the office. The Governor & Crawford off to Bothwell at 12.40. p.m. Governor home from B. Crawford slept here

SATURDAY, 25 Muggy weather. Crawford to stay here for some time. Rain in afternoon.

SUNDAY, 26 Morning service with Gov & Crawford. Slight showers in the morning. Walked in with Crawford at 6 p.m to mail some letters.

[left page] SUNDAY MARCH 5, 1865 Fine clear day. Church in the morning with 2 children Bill & Crawford. 1st Sunday in Lent. Mr. Hutchinson & Mrs Macbeth lunched + teaed. Wrote to Alick. Drove over to Col. Taylor's with some things for Alick. Got a cocker pup from him.

MONDAY, 6. Fine day but thawing at [word crossed out] noon. After office drove out to Capt.White's to see about a military saddle for Alick but [Whitehart?] hadn't one.

TUESDAY, 7. Fine morning but rain in the afternoon then fine again at 5. Wrote to Alick.

[right page] WEDNESDAY MARCH 8, 1865 Sharp frost last night. Thaw in the day time.

THURSDAY, 9. Mingled snow + rain during the day & snow alone at night. Crawford back from Bothwell. Slept at Thornwood.

FRIDAY, 10. Sharp frost last night + about 2 in. of snow. Wrote to Mack Wilson . News that passports system abolished as regards Canada

[Page left] SATURDAY MARCH 11, 1865, Good sleighing. Went to Lively's & to Carlings with Frank Cronyn. Paid Carling $30. on a/c in silver.

SUNDAY,12 Very cold. Aunt, Ann Givins Mr Pease & Cols. Crosse & Richard Crosse out during the day. [a.m.?] the Colonel on "ile" biz. Morning service with Mum Alice & Flo. Davies & Pease in our pew.

MONDAY, 13 Cold day with heavy fall of snow nearly all day. In afternoon drove the Gov [crossed out] to Macbeth's. Macbeth out of his mind. Letters from Fanty.

[Page right] TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 1865. Mild. About 2 in, more snow last night. Rain during the day and very sloppy. Quarter Sessions begun: heavy dockout. Governor off to St Thomas & Sam to Chatham.

WEDNESDAY, 15 Almost hot weather [is come from south?] very sloppy. Governor home from St Thomas at 6:30 p.m. Drove in the little carriageto meet him but missed him. Finished Byles & ommenced Haynes outline of Equity

THURSDAY, 16 Raining in the morning. River very high causing an ice jam below the Court House. Col. Crosse & Mr Pease out in the evening. Gale [crossed out]of wind from west at night.

FRIDAY, 24 1/2in snow last night. Drove in to & from the office in the cart. Governor home from Goderich Assizes. Crawfordout to dinner

SATURDAY, 25. Very cold but roads muddy. Drove in 9.15 p.m. accomodation to meet Mr. Reynolds Train 40m. late. Mr R to [crossed out] stay over till Monday.

THURSDAY, 20. Fine day. Went over to St. Thomas in afternoon & came back at 6 1/2 p.m. Assizes going on there. News that the "Raiders" are not to be given up. Finished Haynes on equity.

FRIDAY, 31. Fine day. Left office at 4 & had a ride with Crawford. Went down to the house. Attended Divisiosn Court in the morning. Buckley/sold out.

SUNDAY, 2. Fine day. Morning service with Flo, Mum & Alice. John & Geo Macbeth, Mr Carling & Col. Lysons out in afternoon. Wrote to Fanty.

MONDAY, 3 Fine day. Assizes commenced, Judge Jno. Wilson presiding. Attended court nearly all day. Letter from Fanty, saying that she has heard of [Mama's?] death. News that Richmond is taken.

[left page] SUNDAY, MAY 28, 1865 Walked into church in the morning. Fred Hammond & Crawford out after lunch. Walked into evening service with Co & Flo.

MONDAY, 29 Fine day. After office played cricket. sparred with Alick in Gymnasium & hurt one of my fingers badly. Gov home at 9.30 p.m.

TUESDAY, 30 Fine day. played cricket after office. Gov. off to Chatham at 12.20 p.m. Home at 11 p.m. when I met him in the cart.

[right page] WEDNESDAY MAY 31, 1865 Fine day but hot. Played cricket after office. Brought Saunders out to Thornwood. Played croquet &c.

THURSDAY, JUNE 1 Hot day. Played cricket after office. Mr Griffin Mr & Mrs Ned Harris & Mrs Wilson (Simcoe) out in the afternoon & evening playing croquet & to tea.

FRIDAY, 2 Hot day. After office drove over to Col. Taylor's & got a coker pup from him - a good one. Coming back met the gov. on his return from St. Thomas. Saunders to dinner. Young Penny drowned [above?{illegible}

[left page] SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 1865 Very hot day. 16th vs Civilians cricket match. former won by 42 runs only 1 innings being played. Looking on for some time instead of being in the office. Jim Templeton up. Firm's bal. sheet shows[crossed out] £1300 for gov. & £300 each for Sam & Bill for profits of 64 65.

SUNDAY, 4 Very hot. Alick and I walked into morning service at St. Pauls. Saunders & Sam out in afternoon.

MONDAY, 5. Hot day. Bill & Sam off for the Far West on a spree [crossed out] by 7 p.m. train. Dinner at 1/2 past 4 in consequence of their departure & Bennett arbitration at the [?]. Crawford to dinner. Took pup over to the dam & taught him to retrieve.

[right page] TUESDAY. JUNE 6, 1865 Hot day. Crawford to dinner. Before dinner walked over to the dam with Alice [Boney?] & [Samuels?]. Sancho washed over the dam.

WEDNESDAY, 7 Very heavy rain at about 3 p.m. At the race course all [crossed out] the afternoon with Alick & Crawford.

TUESDAY, 8. Cool. Mr Emmonds (Detroit) & Crawford out after office to dinner & croquet. Johnny Young also to dinner. Races still going on. Harper won T.C. purse & Clarion Province purse - former $200. latter $150.

[left page] WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1865 Very hot. The Gov. Alick & Dick off to Aldboro' early. A hen pheasant from Mr. Gzowski for Alick arrived at night.

THURSDAY, 3. City public holiday. Office in morning & then came out to lunch with Bill after which we went in to practise cricket. Very hot day. Wrote Bill Girdlestone for Alick's cricket shoes.

FRIDAY, 4. Hot day, Fred Biscoe arrived by 12.30 G.W.R. p.m. train. Went out early & had a swim with him.

[right page] SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1865. Hot day. After office practised cricket for a short time then went out & took Sancho up the river & shot sandpiper. I find that he is now not at all Gun shy. Gov & Dick home by morning Pt. [G?] train. Alick by evg do. 5 woodcock shot.

SUNDAY, 6. Fine day but heavy rain in morning. Morning service with Fred & Alick.

MONDAY, 7. Fine day. Played croquet after office.
