Of course, we know Mr. Hughes would have acted the same way, but we should not like to see Mr. Wilson punished for thas acting.

It is true that Mr. Wilson in public life has never gone out of his way to encourage the Colored man, but in him, I suppose that the Colored man has even more to hope for than in Mr. Hughes, if we may judge Mr. Hughes from his public life, including his term as Governor of the State of New York, But I am not speaking for any candidate or political party; But in the interest of my race and country as I see it, and hope that my feeble words may bring the country to see the error and the gravity of these conditions.

Hoping that Mr. Wilson and Mr. Hughes pay see fit to at once declare what their course would be as to these matters, I am,

Invites the President to speak at convention of the Negro National Educational Congress Washington, D. C., August 23 - 26, 1916.
