Topeka Kan. Agu---26---1916.

Mr Tumulty.

Dear Sir: I enclose you a Booklet that I am about to put out among my people(COLORED) in the interest of the Demoeratic party, while it does not reach as far into details as to the most splendid work of the PRESIDENT and the administration, it is a step in that direction and I am too glad to make the same and if properly encouraged I will be able to interest Thousands of my people to vote for a great and good man PRESIDENT WILSON.

The cut in the Booklet of Mr Wilson, was made from the Photo that you sent me a short time ago. you will notice, that we have said what we had to say in as few words as possible, this is best for my people. The booklet is not just what we wanted, I mean that it does not cover subjects as fully as we would like for them to, but it aims at the proper thing and we will make the next one better; do not hesitate to make any suggestion you see fit to make, because you know, that sometimes we injure our friends trying to help them, I am always open to advice. President Wilson will be elected is my judgement, I hear so many Republicans say openly, that they are going to vote for him: His WAR POLICY and the many good things that the Administration have done for the people will be endorsed in NOVEMBER. He is a great and good man.

Resp. PC Thomas

INTRODUCTION

Your attention is called to the fact that this Booklet is published for the purpose of placing before our people political facts of interest to them; the Republican party has seen fit to leave us out of its deliberations.

The last Negro National Committeeman, Judson Lyons, was also left off the Committee, leaving us without a representative of any kind in deliberations of the so-called Republican party.

Men change their policies, and change their minds accordingly as they agree or disagre to such changes; the Republican party has repudiated everything so far as the black man is concerned. They generally nominate the man who takes no interest in our welfare but in nearly every case of late years, they pick out the meanest man to be found. Do you know Hughes’ record in New York while governor so far as our people are concerned ? Do you know how much recognition he gave the colored people of that state? It will pay you to learn all about Mr. Hughes.

Please bear in mind that a careful perusal of the contents of this booklet will convince you that our condition politically as a race, is a sad one. Unless there is a change soon the Negro in politice in this country will stand for nothing.

Therefore I beg of you to carefully read, weigh and consider the contents herein. You will find that every sentence is plain, and within the comprehension of any one. READ it carefully for your own INFORMATION.

[right page] Colored Men in Politics

If you would ask the average colored man why he loves to dabble in politics he would tell you that it was because he has a right to do so.

That is a poor excuse. We must have an object in view.

Very few colored men change their poltics, while the white change as often as party policies are distasteful to their likes.

No matter what principles are enunciated by the Republican party the Negro usually lines up with the party in full strength, and for what purpose? To some it might appear that it is for the sake of holding a few minor offices, but this is worse than no excuse, for under a Democratic administration the colored man fills about as many offices as under the Republicans.

The Proper Training.

If the colored people had had the proper training in all the years since the ballot was put into our hands we would have learned long ago how to use that ballot in favor of a friend and against an enemy and not for the Republican party.

This young herd which now dominates and controls the destiny of the Republican party knows no more about the Lincoln or Grant style of republicanism
