every method of procedure. To illustrate: We both realize
that the three war amendments have been besmeared and smashed
almost to the point of nothingness. We also know that the
colored race of whom we both are common members, is the specif-
ic victim of this nationalized besmearing and smashing busi-
ness. We know too, that as representatives of this outraged
race we must pull off our coats, roll up our sleeves and get
busy toward helping to make the civic condition better for the
Negro tomorrow than it is today. We are both on the job. But
just look at the difference between the methods of procedure!
I am an unimproved, non-reformed, stand pat, Foraker-Cannon-
Aldrich-Penrose-Grane-Barnes Republican. I detest the word
progressive and if given power, would blot it out of the dic-
tionary, because its written definition is wrong. William
Monroe Trotter takes a different course. No stand pattism
for him. He represents the New Negro; who, like the new white
man is trying to get up against new things and away from old
things. I stand a little closer to the old Negro, who like
the old white man is trying to keep away from the pitfall of new
things and near the solid foundation of old things. I practi-
cally support all of the Republican Party all the time. Mr
Trotter merely supports some of the Republican Party sometimes.
I believe that the Negro can best help himself by remaining in
the Republican Party and fighting out his troubles there.
Mr. Trotter believes that the Negro can best help his race by show-
ing enough political independence to lend his poll support to
any political party when he deems proper. Two years ago, 1
stood pat and supported Taft for the presidency, while Mr.
