My dear Mr. Moffatt,

I owe you and the other editors of the Lit, an humble apology. I received your invitation to the banquet of last evening in a moment of great hurry, framed a reply to it in my mind, laid it down, suffered it to dissappear under a pile of letters, and supposed I had answered it!

It was impossible for me to accept, much as I should have liked to do so; but I have been guilty of a great rudeness in not telling you so much
