[letter heading] PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

CHARLES W.McALPIN SECRETARY

PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY

[/letter heading]

September 29, 1902.

My dear Moffatt:-

You are a hustler with a capital H. I think your scheme is a splendid one -- BUT -- it will mean a lot of work, more than I feel I can give to it. I am willing to back it financially and think it would be easy to raise the money if we could get someone willing to do the work -- do you think you could manage that end of it?

I feel that I shocked you the other night with my remark about a college education. I am afraid I did not state myself as clearly as I wished to do. What I meant to say was that a man whose family has to make sacrifices to send him to college and who comes and loafs away his time would be better out of college and in some shop office or shop where he can't loaf. In reference to the whole matter, however, I would suggest that it rest until after Woodrow Wilson's inaugration as until that time I shall be very busy.

I don't see how I can help you about the transportation of the Philadelphia contingent you mention and would suggset that you strike some of the enthusiastic alumni in Philadelphia.

I remain,

Sincerely yours,

[sig] C W McAlpin [/sig]

Secretary.
