Dear Sir,

Yours at hand, the enclosed
paragraph is [underlined: historical.] Wright is dead
+ Lyon out of health + probably unable
to respond to any communication.

My recollection is that in our time
no athletics existed of the kind now
in vogue . Walking was the chief exercise.
Back of East? West College, about where Alex-
ander Hall now stands, or rather in
the field, just off from old Clio Hall,
there was a field of perhaps 2 acres
+ in it a brick wall - say 15 ft high
+ 20 ft long. Against this wall some
students, notably Webster of my class
(i.e. "Webster unabridged" - he was 6 ft. 2 in.)
played a game of ball, somewhat in
the manner of lawn tennis.

The gymnasium our class built was
prompted by the meagre apparatus described
