Sir:

I have to inform you that the lantern for Cape Foulweather will be shipped to you, Care of Col. Williamson at San Francisco, by the next steamer from New York.

The lantern had better remain at San Francisco till arrangements can be made between you and Col. Williamson to have it shipped direct from San Francisco to Yaquina Bay.

Your letter of the 1st instant relative to payment of bills incurred for Yaquina Bay Light House prior to July 1, 1871, is received.

No additional work should be undertaken at Yaquina without the authority of the Board.

Sir:

On the 18th of November 1870, the Board requested that the President reserve Lots 3 and 4 of section 8, Township 11 W, Willamette Meridian, Oregon, for purposes of a Light House at Yaquina. Subsequently, after correspondence with the Engineer of the District, (then Major Williamson) there was purchased of Lester P. and Sophronia S. Baldwin. Lots 23 and 24, Section 7; Lot 5 and N. W. 1/4 of S. W. 1/4; and S. W. 1/4 of N. W. 1/4 of Section 8, of the same Township.

Lots 3 and 4 of Section 8 have been withdrawn from sale and can be reserved on application of the Board. Will you please to state whether in your opinion the reservation of the whole or a part of this land is to be desired, or whether it should be again opened for sale.

Please to reply at your earliest convenience.

Sir: In reply to your letter of the 2nd instant, I have to inform you that monthly reports of operations should be forwarded to the Board as soon after the close of the month as possible, so as to embody the month's actual operations.

Sir: The U.S. Treasurer informs this office that your deposits with the Sub Treasury at San Francisco and with the 1st Nat'l Bank, Portland, Oregon, are not divided into Light House funds and Engineer funds.

It is important that this division be made at the bank and you will please attend to it that it be done as soon as practicable, and hereafter you will keep the accounts at the bank separate.

instant, you are authorized to enter into contraction written tenders for material, labor and transportation for Cape Foulweather Light House, requiring an answer within ten days and sending the tenders to the most reliable parties.

There is a clause in the appropriation bill which, if passed, will hold the appropriation good for two years from the time the site is obtained and jurisdiction ceded. You will be further informed on this point after the passage of the bill.

Sir:

In reply to your letter of the 6th instant relative to Light House reservation at Yaquina, I have to say that the 20 acres referred to should be surveyed and permanent parks planted and report should be made as to whether these 20 acres will be sufficient for the purpose.

Referring to your letter of the 6th instant, relative to separation of funds, I have to say that as there is still some misunderstanding between the First National Bank at Portland and the [ Treasurer of the United States, you will please inform the Cashier of the Bank, that you should be mentioned in his reports as Light House Engineer.

June 15 To Major H. M. Robert Corps Engineers Sir: The following telegram has been this day sent you: Balances special appropriations for Light Houses to not revert on thirtieth June. Few appropriations are now available.

June 20 From Engineer Secretary Major G.H. Elliot To Major H.M. Robert Corps Engineers Sir: OF the appropriations made for works for your District by the Act of March 3rd 1871, there now remains in the Treasury only a balance of $23,628.56 on account of Cape Foulweather light-station, Oregon 1871-72.
