September

30: Light variable winds to light N. West wind these 24 hours with clear, fine and warm weather. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper & 2nd ass't making out the Quarterly returns. Keeper hoisting and setting the flag pole and raised the American ensign today.

October

1: Light S. East wind first part of 24 hours with cloudy but dry weather. Last part of 24 hours clear, fine and warm weather with variable winds. Sea smooth. General duties for day. 1st ass't went fishing. Keeper & 2nd ass't went to Newport to take the mail and get some supplies. 2nd ass't sent off today to Philadelphia for his uniform, having received his appointment as 2nd ass't September 25th.

2: Light N. West to variable winds and calm first part of 24 hours with clear, fine and warm weather. Last part of 24 hours lightSouth wind with thick fog. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Had 3 visitors today. Steamer Willamett Valley sailed today. 1st ass't Edward Rice left the station at 1.30 P.M. for Portland on important business and to procure needed supplies.

3: Light South wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds and calm with thick damp fog during these 24 hours. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. Keeper went to Newport. Had seven visitors. 2nd ass't showing visitors in tower.

4: Light S.E. to South wind with thick, damp fog first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours fair to cloudy but dry & warm weather. Sea very rough. General duties for the day. Keeper and 2nd ass't went to Newport on business and to get Oates and Wheat.

5: Light S. East wind to light and moderate breeze N.W. these 24 hours with thick, damp fog during the 24 hours. Sea quite rough. 2nd ass't painting in his quarters and showing visitors in tower. Keeper sawing wood and getting Mushrooms. Had 17 visitors today.

6: Light N.W. to S. wind with thick, damp fog during these 24 hours. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ass't returned to the station at 7. A.M. Had 4 visitors today. Keeper and 2nd ass't went to Newport on business today. Steamer Chance arrived from Portland at 9 A.M.

7: Light East to variable winds these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours cloudy but dry. Last part of 24 hours clear, fine and warm. Sea quite rough. Keeper digging potatoes. 2nd ass't painting in his Quarters. 1st ass't went fishing today.

8: Light wind to fresh breeze East to S.E. with dry weather first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light rain showers. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper and 2nd ass't went to Newport today.

9: Gale to fresh breeze S. to S.W. and South these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours rain showers. Last part of 24 hours cloudy and little damp. Sea rough. General duties for day. 1st ass't went over on beach after his shot gun. Barometer 30.7 at 4 P.M.

10: Gale to fresh breeze South these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours rain showers. Last part of 24 hours cloudy with some light rain showers. Sea little rough. General duties for day. 2nd ass't graining his quarters. 1st ass't went hunting geese. Ste[eamer] Willamett Valley arrived and crossed the bar from San Francisco. 1st ass't also went to Newport.

11: Moderate to fresh breeze West to N. West with frequent rain and hail squalls. Last part of 24 hours little cloudy but mostly fair weather with light S. East wind. Sea very rough. Keeper sawing wood. 1st ass't went hunting Ducks and Geese.

12: Light S. East to East wind first part of 24 hours with little cloudy but dry weather. Last part of 24 hours light N. West wind, clear, fine and warm weather. Sea quite smooth. General duties for day. Keeper & 2nd ass't went to Newport on business. 1st ass't went fishing.

13: Light to moderate & fresh breeze N. West these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours rain. Last part of 24 hours cloudy but dry & fair weather. Sea moderately smooth. Keeper taking covers off of Mineral Oil cases & went fishing. 1st ass't went fishing and to Newport after mail.

14: Light S. East wind these 24 hours with frequent rain showers during first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. Keeper & 2nd ass't went to Newport after Oates & Wheat. 2nd ass't also went to Newport to hear Senator Dolph??? speak. Left at 3 P.M.

15: Light S. East to S.W. wind with frequent rain showers during these 24 hours. Sea moderately smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper and 1st ass't putting 200 gallons of Mineral Oil in Oil-room. 1st ass't also went fishing. Had two [continued on next page]
