July 16ff: when reporting "smook" and "smooky" weather - smokey? Where is the smoke coming from? In days gone by they say vast tracts of land would be burning in the summer (just like now, alas) in the dry summer, sparked by lightning and/or human negligence. Is there any report of forest fires around this same time?

I haven't been able to find anything that documents forest fires in July 1896, but I imagine the smoke from burns to the east would have been a normal summer problem. Fortunately the coast rarely burns, but the smoke can blow this way when the wind is right. It's a funny coincidence, as I write this it's smoky here from a prescribed burn that got out of control near the Lighthouse.
