Dear friend

We are in good circumstances as to our health
buisness and &c but our country is suffering the
ravages of war. the indians have desolated the fron-
tiers by massacaring the inhabitants and our cou-
ntry men have taken up their arms and marched
[against] the savages. a body of men under capt Sted-
man was attacted at a considerable distance from the
main army, by a body of indians about dusk. the
whites retreated after having 11 killed including one of the off-
icers we do not know how many indians, 5000
more soldiers have just marched out with the
intention of making a treaty on their own terms
or destroying the whole tribe which is the fox india-
ns. our country is not in so prosperous a state as it has
been but is still the Eden which it has been
