In Richmond Hustings Court, June 11th 1855 The application of Edmund Braxton free persons of color emancipated since the year 1806 for leave to remain in this Commonwealth and reside in this City is continued till Friday next. Know all men by these presents that I John Dounan of the City of Petersburg Va. do by these presents emancipate and set free from bondage My negro man slave named Edmund Braxton and I do endow him with all the privileges and immunities of a free person of colour as fully as it is in my power. The said Edmund Braxton is about 33 years of age of Mulatto complexion and about 5 feet 4 inches high Witness my hand & seal this the 17th of March [AD] 1853. Jno [John] Dounan {seal}

City of Petersburg to Wit; This Day John Dounan personally appeared before me a notary public in the City aforesd [aforesaid] in the State of Va. and acknowledged the foregoing to be his act and Deed. In the Clerks office of the Hustings Court of the City of Petersburg the 2nd day of April AD 1853 This deed of emancipation from John Dounan to Edmund Braxton was this day lodged in the said office and together with the certificate hereto annexed admitted to record the tax on the same having been first paid.
