Know all men by these presents that I John Dounan of the City of Petersburg Va. do by these presents emancipate and set free from bondage My negro man slave
named Edmund Braxton and I do endow him with all the privileges and
immunities of a free person of colour as
fully as it is in my power.
The said Edmund Braxton
is about 33 years of age of Mulatto
complexion and about 5 feet 4 inches high
Witness my hand & seal this the 17th of March [AD] 1853.

appeared before me a notary public in the City
aforesd [aforesaid] in the State of Va. and acknowledged the
foregoing to be his act and Deed.
