what we want in President Grant's message through Mr. Green. He is the most intimate friend of Genl Grants most intimate friend, Mr. Borie of Phila. Mrs. Green, as you know has quite a large interest in the claims, & he (Mr. G.) Would do almost anything to serve her. - so if you will indicate something that you think will cover our wants we will try what can be done through Mr. Green.
If we can accomplish it in that way it will be much better than availing of the aid of politicians through whom we can no doubt manage it or at any rate through Mr. Fish.
Please let us know if you think well of this suggestion & we will write Mr. G. at once.
Truly yours
Barling & Davis

Wm. W. Crapo Esqr Dear Sir,
We have your much valued favor 3rd Inst. & we have read the article in the "Mercury".
It is very satisfactory indeed & if it has not been done already we wish you would cut it out and send it to Mr. Fish in an envelope marked personal - otherwise he may not see it. & it will be well to pursue the same course with the article which is to appear in the "Advertiser".
We will write a line to Mr. Green & get him to do what we suggested if he will, & if Gov. Clifford will, as you think, lend his influence to accomplish what we want we may almost count upon it as fixed.
Truly yours Barling & Davis
We enclose an article by our old friend Mr. Jno. S. Parker from to days Journal of Commerce - which is very sound.

Dear Sir, We have your favor of Inst. and note contents.
Mr. Beaman spent several days here & at New Bedford, & on Saturday last went to Washington to remain until last of this week.
He is very desirous of meeting you after his return so as to mark out some programme for future proceedings, & if you can run over after his return, of which you will be advised, we wish you would do so.
We have a letter from Mr. Green in which he advises us that he has written as us requested him to, to
