Foster Cunliffe Esq:

Rappa. [Rappahannock] May.22.1736

Sir

I have this day drawn on you to Colo. [Colonel] Thos. Lee. for four hundred & eleven pounds twelve shillings which is to pay for some Negro's I bought last year out of the Lively Capt. [Captain] Cullum. but as the Coloney assures me that the Bills are to be sent to yourself I hope they can make no great difficulty though you should not be in cash for all my tobo. [tobacco] sent you last year. I have early sent you by one Capt. [captain] Blain seven hhds tobacco. I intend to sen[t?] you sixty by the Little Betty, and twenty by Cap. [captain] Loxum from all which I expect a considerable advantage, as it is every one's [everyone's] opinion that the Exportation of Tobo. [tobacco] this year will fall much short of what it has been since 1704. I am very sensible of the Inconvenience Merchants are put to by drawing immediately on the tobo. [tobacco] sent them, & therefore will avoid any trouble of this fort if possible I can. But if it should fall out otherwise that I must draw a small bill or two, it shall not be till [until] the fall that I may give you all the time I can. I am just now going to write to Mr. Athawes to make insurance on the Little Betty; & when she is ready to sale [sail] which I hope will be about the tenth of July. I shall write to you again.

I am

Sir

Your most Humble Servant

John Carter
