MESSRS. H. L. MARSH, & CO., FAIRBURY, LIVINGSTON CO., ILL.
GENTLEMEN: In compliance with your request to subject a sample of
coal from the Marshfield Coal Mines to chemical examination, I beg leave
to report the following result. It contains in one hundred parts:
Moisture,....7.03
Volatile substances,....30.50
Carbon in Coke,....55.64
Ashes, (Gray,)....6.83
—100 parts.
The specific gravity is,....1.312
100 parts of this coal sustains a loss in coking of,....37.53
Total weight of Coke is,....—62.47
It is well coking, and as far as can be judged from the fragmentary
specimens handed me, contains but little sulphur of iron. The analysis
of other American coals, published in T. G. Norwood's work in 1858, on
page 58, shows that the coal from the Marshfield Coal Mines, equals the
best varieties of Missouri and Ohio.
