my furnace and grates, and have particularly observed its character. It
seems to be quite free from sulphur and filled with gas. In the grates
the gas burns with great brilliancy, and is mostly reduced to coke, which
afterwards burns freely, leaving nothing but ashes as the residue, and I
consider it fully equal, if not better, than coal from the bituminous mines
of Pennsylvania sold in this city.

Very truly yours,
MERRIL LADD.

CHICAGO STEAM SUGAR REFINERY,
CHICAGO, March, 1865.
I have used coal from the Marshfield Mines, and prefer it to any coal I
have used from central or northern Illinois Coal Mines.

W. H. BELCHER.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill., September, 1865.
I have dealt in coal from the Marshfield mines ever since the shaft was
opened, and I consider the coal of better quality than coal from any other
mines in central or northern Illinois.

JOHN JAMES, Coal Dealer.

CHICAGO, Ill., Nov. 20, 1865.
This is to certify that I have used the coal from the Marshfield mines,
and had great satisfaction in doing so. I esteem it as good as the
Pennsylvania coals now in use here.

A. C. BADGER

CHICAGO, Ill., Nov. 20, 1865.
This is to certify that I used at my residence the coal from the Marsh-
field mines last winter, and must say to the great satisfaction of myself
and family I esteem it a superior coal, and as good as any Bituminous
Coal sold in this market, and far preferable to any other Illinois Coal.

JOHN C. HILTON.

PONTIAC, Ill., Sept. 14, 1865.
This is to certify that I have used the Fairbury Coal in the Chenoa
Mills for nearly two years, and I prefer it for making steam to any other
I have used for that purpose.

JOHN DEHMER.
