Samuel Fernyhough was born on 26th January, 1915,
at Auckland, and received his secondary education at Auckland
Grammar School. He furthered his education by attending Brains
Commercial College, where he studied Bookkeeping and Typing. He was
actively interested in football and swimming. At the time of
his making application for aircrew training in the R.N.Z.A.F. on
the 28th July, 1941, he was employed as a grocery assistant by
Beehive Stores Limited, Clevedon, Auckland. Prior to his
enlistment in the Air Force he served for 2 years in the Territorials.

F/Sgt. Fernyhough was enlisted at Rukuhia, Hamilton,
on the 11th July, 1942, and was employed at this station and
Tauranga on ground duties, until he was posted on the 4th February,
1943 to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua to commence his initial
training as an air gunner. He embarked for Canada on the
5th May, 1943, to continue his training under the Empire Air
Training Scheme.

On arrival in Canada, Flight Sergeant Fernyhough was
posted, on the 22nd May to No. 2 Wireless School, Calgary, Alberta,
and thence on the 25th February, 1944 to No. 2 Bombing and Gunnery
School, Mossbank, Saskatchewan. At the latter school he was - on
the 10th April, 1944 - awarded the Wireless Operator Air Gunner's
badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was promoted to
Flight Sergeant on the 10th October, 1944. He proceeded to No. 4
Air Observers School, London, Ontario, on the 17th April where he
carried out air exercises as Wireless Operator Air Gunner on Anson
aircraft. He embarked from No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia,
for the United Kingdom on the 4th October, 1944.

Sgt. Fernyhough arrived at No. 12 (R.H.Z.A.F.) Personnel
Reception Center, Brighton, on the 13th October, 1944 and was
posted on the 20th February, 1945 to No. 10 (Observer) Advanced
Flying Unit, Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, where he carred out additional
