My dear Mr Holladay,
As the meeting of
the officers of the Church is at your house
tomorrow, I have thought perphaps it would
be more satisfactory for me to write what
I said at the last meeting of the officers.
It is simply this - to volunteer to a re-
duction o fmy Salary as Pastor of College
Church. I have though of this as you know
for a long time, and suggested it also
a year ago. I do it, because there seems
to be so much difficulty in raising the
amount promised. And while it is true
perhaps that some do nothing, I am
almost sure some generous givers
are constrained to do more than their
share. It is distressing to me to be aware
that struggling efforts have to be made
at certain recurring times. I think
it is a bad plan and precedent. And
I do not at all like the idea of the willing
