Short stop in the major N-S
range of hills dissected by
the Chieng Mai-Lee road.
Open, deciduous, broad-leafed woodland,
a type of "monsoon forest" which
covers larger areas of N.W.
Thailand. These specimens were
collected on a rock-strewn
ridge above the road. Stout bamboo,
clumps of grass, low
shrubs and cycads are scattered among
the small rocks. In general,
the understory is scanty, though in full wet-season growth.
Partially cloudy
midday, showers threatening any
minute, sun shining
briefly the next.

A special note in one layer
concerns an interesting
relationships between a Trigona
stingless bee and its Reduviid
mimic; a good series

of Reduviids were found an
the resin tube entrance to
the bee nest where they had lived
generation after generation feeding
on the bees themselves.

STOP 283 - THAILAND:
10 MI. N. SARABURI, 100 METERS,
VII-21-62
2000 specimens.

These specimens were collected
in the stop 273
habitat 10 days later. (See
STOP 273 description).
Very heavy rain
had fallen over most of
Central Thailand during this
period; most of the Bangkok
rice bowl was flooded.
The streams and pords in the
Pukae Botanical Garden
were swollen and more muddy,
the ground was thoroughly
saturated - in general, the
whole area had a water-
logged look. The
