This collection contains letters written by Samuel Denison to his wife, son and daughter from 1856 to 1869. Denison was a San Francisco businessman involved with financing the Mexican government. At the time of the writing of these letters he has gone to Mexico City to press his unpaid claim of $170,000. ** Please note that historical materials may include viewpoints and values that are not consistent with the values of the California State Library or the State of California and may be considered offensive. My dear Son

You do not know how delighted I was to Recive a letter from you I believe its the first, you say that you were disapointed at the Bank. My dear boy you must learn to trust them when you arrive at manhood they will come often. If I am not mistaken when I return you will not need any clerkship. All looks bright ahead. So you must not be uneasy nor set your mother about me. be patient and if short of this mindfull, Run as right as you can see Abel Guy and arrange with him to wait untill I get home Allso with all -- I see that the marshall is about Selling som of my property do not interfere with them Let them go ahead. I shall have enough without it unless I am mistakebn. if you are short (bad) call on som friend of mine for a small amt

Remember me to Capt Mins family Capt Frome boys and all -- [illeg] this the [?] is bad the first and let no one see it your mother the same

City Mexico 17th Feby 1856

My dear Wife

I have writen you a number of letters and with a faint hope of your recieving many of them. I wrote you some of the particulars of my imprisonment, it was Rather Hard treatment, but but the thoughts of you and my children nerved me to that Degree that I did not feel it, for believe Me when away from you all is the only time that I can realize the real Love I bear you

by this you see that iIam in Mexico city City of Mexico where I am at Liberty and in good Heatlh with Every prospect of Collecting my Bonds as all are in my favour, President, Ministers and all the Foreigb Legations are In favour of confirming Admiral Zerman, and you may Expect me when I do come (as I told you when I left you) with something for the children you must as I have told you in all my letters get along the best you can until I can be with you call on som of our Friends if you have any for a few Hundred Dollars, and by all means do not trouble yourself about me. I am in a better prospect than I ever was in my Life, and was never more cheerful Say to Thomas to not put about not Having Employment but to study at Home until I get there, and to not do anything about my property Let it go, only arrange with Abel Greg about the Rent

My dear Son

Your Father now has had Liberty and a good Prospect of Collecting his Bonds -- the President and all of the Ministers are favourable towards me and I think the admiral will be confirmed and all will be Settled Right

My health was never better than now and all I wish for now particularly is the security of of my Family. You say that now can fill the big chair as well as your Father. All I have to Say is that I would like to do So and Smoke a good Cegar with you, or I did not think you must be broe by this time. never Mind. My Dear boy, as I often told you, the old man is Lookinf but for you. and when he gets back (He will be mighty glad) you must get along as well as you can with your Dear Mother (for Remember She is Dear to you and your Sister, now could be more so) until I get Home wich will be I hope soon -- do nothing with my property Except with Abel Greg get an Extencion of Rent if you are not Employed you must Study at home. Kiss your Mother and Sister for Me -- take good Care of Bill and the Dogs. Tell Bill to not get maried. Say to Capt Minn
